Fall Dock Inspections

Summer is over now, and the holidays are quickly approaching. As the wind blows stronger and colder and the water temperature drops, maintenance for our docks and boats doesn’t stop, it merely slows down. Now is a good time to take a minute and look over your dock for possible repairs or preventative measures.

Pick up trash debris or stow- secure items from washing- blowing off your dock. Look for loose boards and hardware backing out. Check for any deteriorating pilings, or boards. Look over the general condition of your dock and take notes on wear and tear and any maintenance that needs addressing. Beware of what you don’t see. The tidal line as well as the bottom of your pilings are where most of your problems can be had due to ship worms and many other wood boring creatures.

Call professional divers to inspect what you can’t see. A professional diving company will know what to look for and where to look for any signs of problems now or in the future. Professional divers will also be able to give recommendations to consider like wrapping your pilings to insure a long lasting and healthy dock.

Dock maintenance is the key to dock safety. Fall is the perfect time to assess your dock and make any needed improvements.

Evidence of wood borers like shipworms, pholads, gribbles and pill bugs can often be seen at low tide.

Damage from wood borers can be hidden behind marine growth like barnacles and oysters.

Hire a professional dive crew to clean and inspect your pilings.
